Jan 21st: Usman & Preston Reed Live at Celtic Connections
The New York-born acoustic guitar pioneer Preston Reed – now a longtime resident in Scotland – continues to expand the instrument’s parameters with his dazzling two-handed percussive technique, and to influence successive generations of younger players. He performs here with one of his most prodigiously gifted disciples, the Pakistani guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Usman Riaz, a pairing which promises a masterclass in six-string virtuosity.
Completing a veritable feast for guitar aficionados is New Zealand’s Thomas Oliver, whose 2013 album Beneath the Weissenborn is the first recording wholly devoted to the eponymous and iconic lap-slide brand, revealing an array of innovative voicings and sonic textures.
